What we're doing and where we're going.
Ian is here
On the 22nd we went and had some pictures done of Ian. I got a few of them for birth announcements. Who could resist this face!

This is the picture we used for his announcement. It looks like he has a mole above his lip, but it's a problem with the picture. Unfortunately we didn't notice it until we got the pictures home.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
So, after many weeks of nagging, Alison finally agreed to go see Mr & Mrs Smith.

We both liked the movie. Very funny, enough action for me and not too much action for Alison. I was wondering how the characters would get together in the first place, and I think they did a good job with that part of the story.

A friend of mine, let's call him "John", said he hated the movie, but I think he needs to go see it again when he's not falling asleep. Also, he probably had expectations (like I did) of more action, less of the main characters sitting and talking. However, the scenes with the main characters sitting and talking are some of the funniest parts of the movie.

Love and Taxes
Love and Taxes by Josh Kornbluth was great fun! We saw this show at the Intiman on Friday night, and while I didn't have high hopes, I was greatly surprised and rewarded with how good it was.

From the intiman site:
In INTIMAN's tradition of bringing our audiences the personal stories of today's great artists in solo shows like R. Buckminster Fuller: The History (and Mystery) of the Universe, Lackawanna Blues and 21 Dog Years, we present a comedy for everyone who pays their taxes — and everyone who doesn't! Popular Bay Area artist Josh Kornbluth, author of the acclaimed autobiographical monologue Red Diaper Baby and the star, co-writer and co-director of the 2001 Seattle International Film Festival hit movie Haiku Tunnel, delivers his acclaimed new full-length solo performance about his $27,000 debt to the IRS, falling in love and the absurdity of life.

So, knowing it's a story about a debt to the IRS, really, how how can your hopes be!

That being said, it really was a good story. Josh Kornbluth is an amazing story teller. There really are few good story tellers out there, but he is definitely one of them. I often find myself getting bored at one man shows, but that was not the case here. As the show ended I found myself wanting more.

When I was looking at my Netflix list I even found that I had Haiku Tunnel on my rental list. So now I definitely want to see it.

Check out Josh Kornbluth's site: http://www.joshkornbluth.com/ for more info about him.

Unfortunately it has now left Seattle, but if it comes to a theatre near you, see it!

Good Boys at The ACT
Friday night we had tickets to see Good Boys at the Act. Wow, what a show.

From their site: Two strangers - one white, one black - linked by tragedy meet on a park bench. One man's son executed a Columbine-style high school massacre, killing the son of the other. Good Boys is the story of two fathers. Racial tension segues into the exploration of parental responsibility in this explosive, yet life-confirming, drama. Good Boys, by Pulitzer finalist Jane Martin, follows the fathers' discussion - heated and reflective by turns - about race, faith, and who should get the blame when good boys go bad.

The actors in this show were great. The men playing the fathers you could just feel their pain. The young man who played the shooter I found a little less even, but still great. And the young men playing one of the dead and his younger brother were also excellent. The major focus of the story was the interraction between the fathers, but we get to see some flashbacks from before the shooting.

And it was so thought provoking! How does a parent go on after something like this, whether their child was killed or was the kiler. You have to look at everything that lead up to that day and wonder, what might have been done differently, what might have kept this from happening. And then parental responsibility, whew. The civil suits following such an event. And even more intense look at what you did or did not do. And how do we ever know that anything that was done would have changed anything. Hindsight is 20/20 as we know.

Do not see this expecting to be uplifted. It's not there. But if you want to really think about the emotions surrounding such an event, it's more than worth it. Just simple things like the father no longer being employable by virtue of who he was. And how a marriage survives after such a tragedy. And most of all, how do you make sense of the world around you after something like this.

Another crazy weekend
This weekend we were in Seattle, but we had alot going on.

Friday night we had tickets to see Jumpers at The Act.

The description of Jumpers from the Act Site is:

An intellectual burlesque of the first order, Jumpers is another leap into the wide-ranging mind of Tom Stoppard. As a professor of moral philosophy tries to finish his symposium address Man - Good, Bad, or Indifferent?, his wife and a dandy-cum-politician try to dispose of a corpse in the next room. A fantasia of wit, suspense, and ideas, Jumpers is classic Stoppard. The witty banter and intellectual antics fill the stage to overflowing. Unforgettable characters create a two-ring theatrical circus of ideas and high-spirited comedy. And, oh, did we mention the Jumpers?

Sean enjoyed the show more than I, so hopefully he'll comment upon it. One of the main characters was a philosophy professors, so various "schools" of philosophy came up. But the story itself was good, just the philosophy gave me a headache. Sean loved philosophy in college, I hated it, so there you have it. :)

Saturday we had tickets to see the Mariners at Safeco Field. We were in the 14th row behind the Mariners dugout. Wow! Great seats. I've only been closer once before, 2nd row behind the dugout. It's just such an amazing way to go to a game. We got there a little late and the Mariners were losing, but ended up winning. Then we find out, it's a double header. We left about half way through the 2nd game. We were both tired (too much sun). We ended up being glad we did as they went into extra innings (3 extra) and if we had not left when we did we would have wanted to stay until the end. The seats were mostly in the shade, but we still got some sun. I had a nice bright red face and Sean a red nose. But it was a great day.

Sunday we had tickets to the Van Gogh exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. I'm not a big Van Gogh fan, but it was more than just his stuff, plus how can you pass up an opportunity to see his stuff up close. There were also some cubists and pointillists in the exhibit. I did find that I really like Van Gogh's charcoals and water colors. I think they are great. It's the oils that I am not as fond of. But then again, I generally prefer charcoals and water colors over oils. The pointillists works also appealled to me. We then had dinner with Hope and Lyle at The Brooklyn. We had not been there and it was quite nice.

Somehow then it was Monday again!

What a difference 100 years can make
This past weekend was our trip to NJ for Sean's great aunt Rene's 100th Birthday. Yep, you read that right. 100 years.

Just like our NS trip, we had a rotten flight out. We got stuck in Chicago due to a storm on our way to NJ. We boarded late, then sat on the run way for a good 90 minutes or so. (I eventually lost track). After doing some sleeping I started reading my book, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Let's just say, hitting the section discussing what happens to a corpse during a water crash while hitting turbulence is not the brightest thing to be doing.

We had planned to meet people for dinner Friday night, but it was too late so we just grabbed a bite at the hotel and then crashed for the night.

The party started at 1, so we slept until about 11 and then wandered over. Wow, what a large group of people in attendance. There were drinks and appetizers in the bar and then the party moved to the dining area for lunch and dancing. Sean's dad prepared a speech for Rene that was quite nice. I should find out if anyone recorded it so we could put it up on the site. Sean, his dad and his uncles all wore kilts for the event. That was quite amusing. They also had a bag pipe player come in and play for a bit.

It was a very nice party and they were to the point of kicking us out. The party continued back at Paul and Elaine's. It was very nice to see their new condo. It is amazing. Lots of room and a nice layout. I loved the kitchen (of course). We stayed there until 9ish, then back to the hotel.

Sunday Sean got up and had breakfast with his parents and Sue and Matt. He came back to the hotel in time for us to check out and then took me to get some lunch. He was still a bit hungry after mis-ordering his breakfast. We then decided to just go to the airport. We didn't hit any traffic so we were there early, so I got a 30 minute massage. Then we just hung out and read until time for our flight, which was also late. We had to do a mad dash to our 2nd flight, but we made it, and so did our luggage.

It was a quick weekend, but fun. Hopefully Sean will add his comments in as well.

Alanis Morissette & Barenaked Ladies
We tried out the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn for the first time to see Alanis Morissette & Barenaked Ladies.

The venue is great. Seats are pretty comfy (although after 3 hours, not so much), great site lines, and 2 big screens for those farther back.

Barenaked Ladies put on a great show. I didn't care as much for Alanis (this is Alison speaking) as I found her screeching at high volume more than I could take.

I blame part of my dislike of the Alanis part on
1. My being tired
2. My back hurting
3. Just plain exhaustion on my part

We spent Saturday power washing and cleaning in preparation for the party on July 31 and then Sunday was Costco, Home Depot and the grocery, things I avoid on the weekend during the middle of the day. But sometimes you do what you have to do.

I'm now going to start looking for real seats for String and Annie Lennox rather than lawn seats as they really are fairly comfy. Lots of butt and leg room. Considering it was just completed last year, it is nice to see they planned ahead.

The food prices are through the rough I will say. But we expected as much.

So I recommend catching Alanis Morissette & Barenaked Ladies if they are at a venue near you. Good show overall. I had heard that Barenaked Ladies does a great show, and it's true.

Sue and Matt's Wedding - Day 1
Today was a day of traveling to Nova Scotia. We had a 7:45AM flight from Seattle that had us landing in Halifax at 8:45PM.

Ok, now that you're done laughing over the idea of the two of us being somewhere at 7:45, I'll continue.

We actually were up early enough to go out to breakfast before going to the airport. There wasn't much conversation, but we were up and dressed. Because this was an international flight we couldn't check in online, but luckily the line was short and quick. After we checked in we went to the InMotion booth to pick up the 2 DVD players we rented, then on to security. Security has "reorganized" and it actually went very quick as well. We had plenty of time.

The flight to Newark was uneventful.

We had time in Newark so grabbed some lunch. Then on to our flight to Halifax. We begin our descent and when we're 300 ft from the ground the pilot still cannot see the ground, so we don't land. We go back in the air, and seem to circle for a bit. Finally they come on and say, well, as you probably noticed, we did our descent, but did not land. It is too foggy, so we're going to go to Boston, the closest airport than can accommodate a plane of our size. Um...what??? To top it off, there are people on our flight who had tried to get in the previous night, but that flight was canceled. We had heard that weather was bad the 2 previous days and so they were taking volunteers to give up their spots, so the plane was packed and even more so with people who had been waiting a day to get there. A bit later they come on and say, it looks like they are going to actually send us back to Newark. Um...what??? Then a bit later they come on and say, ok, we're actually going to Boston to refuel, and then back to Newark. Ok, now none of us is believing anything they say.

Finally we get back to Boston and they say, they are going to refuel, but we're going to have a new pilot to take us back to Halifax. Supposedly some other flights had been able to land after us. Unfortunately our pilot's time has run out, so we need a new pilot, but he is on a plane that hasn't landed yet. So we waited about 45 minute for a new pilot. They won't let us off the plane. If you got off, you weren't allowed back on. Ugh. Finally we take off and we head back to Halifax. We land at 12:45 AM. Yep, 4 hours late. All because we didn't have enough fuel to try to just hang out and try to land again and still be able to get to another airport if that landing failed.

Customs and painless and quick. Found a cab and as we walked in, they knew who we were for check-in. They were booked full for the night and we were the last ones in.

Sleep...glorious sleep.

Sue and Matt's Wedding - Day 2
Sean managed to get up and have lunch with his family while I stayed in the hotel and slept until 2.

The rehearsal dinner started a 4:30, so we met his parents at their hotel around 3:30. The rehearsal dinner was at Matt's parents, so we drove out there. We got lost, but managed to correct the situation after a call to the house. They live in Falls City, about 30 minutes outside Halifax. The scenery was very nice.

The dinner was lovely. The rehearsal dinner public photo album has pictures of all the adults, and it was quite a crowd.

Then back downtown for the rehearsal.

After the rehearsal was drinks at The Georgio, the bar in the Prince George Hotel. As you can see in the Georgio photo album, we took over the bar. Unfortunately, they didn't know we were coming and were a bit overwhelmed.

We closed the place at 11, and some groups went on to more festivities afterwards. We opted to go to sleep. Morning would come too soon.

Here's is a link to the various photo albums from the wedding.
